March 22, 2018 / Inside Europe

Special Mater Dei Welcome to Boltaña:

We just received the news that the Mayor of Boltaña is welcoming the Mater Dei High School travelers in the charming hilltop town of Boltaña on Tuesday, April 3 in the afternoon.
iNSIDE EUROPE proudly introduces the beautiful town of Boltaña iN Spain as a new destination iN Spain for 2018 and we are counting down the days to the MDHS performance in the stunning Colegiata de San Pedro, one of the largest churches in the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Impressive Gothic Church with a Baroque Choir

San Pedro of Boltaña was built during the sixteenth century, on the site of a small Romanesque church. The impressive church is an example of “Aragonese Gothic” style but with abundant Renaissance elements. The bell tower on the north side dates back further than the present church and was part of the original city fortifications. Inside the church, the magnificent ribbed vault ceiling are are testimony to the importance of the town of Boltaña at that time.

Another highlight is the impressive choir, brought to Boltaña from the Monastery of San Victorián, located at the foot of the Peña Montañesa. It is composed of 27 seats, all hand-made of walnut wood. The choir loft was crafted during the second half of the eighteenth century, and is Baroque. The choir is dedicated to St. Benedict (founder of the Benedictine Order) and scenes of the saint’s life are depicted on the backs of each seat.

The church of Boltaña also houses the altarpiece of the church of San Lorenzo de Morillo de Sampietro and the baptismal fountain of Burgasé. These decorative elements were brought to town and the church as a consequence of the depopulation of the region and the need to relocate important treasures that were abandoned in their place of origin.

Tuesday, April 3 at 7 pm

The Choral Artists from Mater Dei Catholic High School are singing Mass on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 7 pm followed by a short concert at La Colegiata de San Pedro.
